Back in 2003, Steve Smith and Derek Muggleton decided to take a coaching course organised by the ETTA (English Table Tennis Association). Derek had been playing for more than 30 years in Coventry and Kettering TT Leagues, and Steve for around 4 years in Kettering.
The two newly qualified coaches with the help and support of the Baptist Church began a small club on a Monday evening with 5-6 members meeting for a couple of hours of exercise and practice. Some were novices and others returning to the game after a few years break. Several players asked to be included in a new league team (Kettering Div. 3) for the coming season. Over the ensuing years the club has grown in numbers to more than 30 members and is represented by 7 teams playing in all of the Kettering Leagues.
At the end of the 2012 season our A team had retained their title in the Premier division after a decisive year winning nearly all of their league games.
We now have an over 50’s group (numbering 20+) meeting each Monday at 2pm until 4pm through the year, and occasionally on a Tuesday afternoon. There is a junior section for beginner coaching, meeting also on Monday at 6.30pm and league practice from 8pm onwards.
Over the last 6 years we have enjoyed a 12 hour TT marathon, raising funds for Cransley Hospice and Crazy Hats as well as several other charities. We have succeeded in raising through sponsorship nearly £7,000 and it is our intention to carry on putting something positive back into the community in which we live. This effort usually takes place in the early autumn, so look out for the advertisements in the local media and come along to have a go.
